It does not refer to the age of the animal as both young and adult alpacas are capable of producing fiber that grades as “Royal Baby Alpaca.”  This is the finest grade given and is not only the softest, but most rare alpaca fiber on the planet. Less than 1% harvested annually qualifies as Royal Baby Alpaca. Unlike sheep’s wool, alpaca is far more sustainable and earth friendly. While alpacas themselves have a very light footprint on the planet, Alpaca wool requires only nominal cleaning during processing, using less water and mild soap instead of harsh solvents. The processing into knits is Fair trade certified as well. This all means a sweater that feels oh! so good to wear in every way imaginable.
